Karma is a pretty big topic to cover since it can influence every part of your life. Then again, karma is incredibly easy to explain and understand. We all know about The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" and also, "What goes around comes around." That’s karma in a nutshell. If we’ve done someone wrong—even to ourselves—karma will force us to repeat the mistakes and/or pay the price until we pay our dues. It’s that simple.
So, where does this karma come from and how bad is it…really? We all carry karma over from past lives. This is why you’re struggling in one or more areas of your life. Most people seem to incur karmic debt in the areas of love, health, money, success, and happiness. If you fouled up in a past life in one of those areas, guess what? You’re here to do it all over again until you get it right.
You can also pile on the karmic debt in your present life in both big and small ways. The bigger the “crime” the deeper you get in the karmic-debt-hole. Nobody wants to believe they’re a bad person, and when it comes to the soul and Universal energy, nothing really is bad or good. (I’m not talking evil here, just the basic good and bad.) Everything is meant to teach us something, even the hard times. The key is, learning those lessons. Karma isn't meant to punish, just to retain balance. For example, if you've been exercising or out in the sun too long you get thristy and drink water to get your body back into a balanced state of hydration. That's what karma is like. Consider it a blessing rather than a curse. It's meant to help you become a better person in all areas.
Smaller examples of karma could be butting in front of someone in line at the bank because you were in a hurry, or snapping at a friend or family member because you’re in a bad mood. Bigger examples of karma could be lying to someone you care about, being dishonest in general, refusing to take care of your health, spending money on something foolish when it should go toward rent, or being selfish with your time, money, or kindness. These are karmic debts we’re accumulating in the here and now. Then we have all that past life karma to worry about too? Yikes!
A lot of people come to me for past life readings so I can tap into the reasons why they’re stuck in a certain place in their life or why certain problems seem to follow them around. Some of my clients want love so badly, and yet they can’t find a loving partner despite their best efforts. Others go through one money crisis after another, no matter how badly they want to be financially secure. Still others wrestle with health—mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.
Although a psychic reading can really home in on the cause of your current karmic issues, a quick and easy way to determine where you went awry in a past life or years ago in your present life is to think about where you struggle most. Sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it? “I have money problems, so my karma is finances.” Yep, it really is that easy! Of course, you may not know exactly who, when, where, how and why you have this debt piled on your shoulders, but at least you know what it is. Until you overcome this recurring or longstanding problem, you’ll just have more and more of it. It won’t go away on its own, no matter how much you hope, wish, or pray for it to. We need to take responsibility for our karma!
Too many people I’ve met love to hide behind their karma. “I know I’m sick, overweight, in a bad relationship, have a terrible job, am broke, etc., but it’s my karma. Nothing I can do about it.” That's usually followed by a shrug and a grimace. Nonsense! You can do something about karma right here and now. How?
1. Try to be “awake” as often as possible. A lot of times we go through our days in a sort of half-trance and don’t pay attention to what we’re doing and saying. By living in the here and now as much as possible, you have a better chance of making more positive decisions, helping others when they need it, offering a word of praise or a compliment, and the like. How good do you feel when someone compliments you? You probably feel great, so why not start complimenting at least one person per day, if not more?
2. Correct any wrongs in your life that you’re able to. If you feel guilty about not spending enough time with your kids or partner, don’t put it off any longer. No more excuses! Housework, your career, problems, bills and other things will still be there an hour from now so take time out to enjoy the ones who mean the most to you. If something happened years ago and you can't resolve it with this person, at least acknowledge your part and send a mental prayer to this person asking for forgiveness or to at least let things go.
3. Volunteer your time. I know, a lot of you may be thinking, “Are you kidding? I barely have enough time to breathe yet alone volunteer!” I’m not talking about spending hours and hours each week in a nursing home visiting the elderly. (Though if you have the time to do it, you should.) But there are small things you can do once a week or even once a month to help spread goodwill and positive energy. You could go through your home once a month and donate items to a local shelter, Goodwill or Salvation Army. If you sew, crochet or knit you could donate blankets to Project Linus (one of my favorite charities.) Or simply help out an elderly neighbor or relative once a week. Anything that creates an aura of positive energy will help cleanse karma.
4. For the bigger karmic influences at work in your life, sit down and be honest with yourself. If you tend to attract the same negative type of relationship, money slips through your fingers, or you keep adding on the pounds, you need to face this demon head-on. It’s not going to go away. Make a list of the negative things you do that keep adding to this karmic snowball then make another list of how you can correct it. Be realistic though; your karmic debt won’t go away over night, so make small changes at first then tackle bigger ones over time. Who knows, you may have been carrying this karma around for a thousand years! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t release it all within a week. Slow and steady wins the race. As long as you are moving forward on a positive path, you'll get past this karmic crud.
A couple more things to keep in mind is to take more chances, smile more often, grab opportunities as they arise, and have an optimistic outlook. Bad times don’t last, but good people do.
